How to Build an Energy Efficient Home Using BrightLeaf’s Building Science

New construction means a better-built home, right? That’s the assumption when it comes home building – and anything else “new” for that matter.

If you’ve read any other BrightLeaf Home blogs or even browsed our website before clicking on this article, you already know that the first statement is actually quite controversial in the building industry. New construction does not necessarily mean better built.

Most homes that are built new are, of course, better in comparison to older ones that were constructed with now outdated building methods or hazardous materials. Resolving those issues in modern-day home building is just the bare minimum of what’s expected, though.

When it comes to BrightLeaf new construction homes, we use the latest building science and high-performing materials to make our homes more healthy, sustainable, and energy-efficient.

Using our Lumen Point home in Western Springs as an example, we’re going to walk you through all the elements and methods we use at BrightLeaf for building a truly sustainable and energy-efficient home, making it better than the standard build-to-code new construction you see in today’s marketplace.

Insulating for Maximum Comfort

At BrightLeaf we use a staggered stud framing method which allows our insulation to weave in between each framing member, preventing thermal bridging and creating a better temperature-controlled interior.

Additionally, we use dense pack cellulose insulation that’s made from recycled post-consumer paper products for a sustainable and environmentally friendly material. The insulation is blown in so that it reaches every nook and cranny in the framing structure for a truly comfortable home.

In comparison, many other builders will use fiberglass insulation, which is a more economical option, but can be less effective and can contain toxic chemicals that we don’t want your family breathing once you move into your BrightLeaf home.

High Performance Mechanicals

Another building element hidden behind the walls that plays a big role in the overall home performance is your mechanicals, which are the plumbing, electric, and heating/cooling systems. Sub-optimal mechanicals can result in higher utility bills, frequent maintenance, or pricey repairs – all things we imagine don’t excite you as a homeowner.

In our Lumen Point model, besides the high-efficiency HVAC system, one of the most important mechanicals we’re incorporating into the plan is a tankless water heater. Instead of wasting energy (and paying for it) to maintain your water at a constant temperature like traditional water heaters, a tankless water heater will instantly heat the water as it passes through to the plumbing fixtures.

Not only are tankless water heaters a big money saver for utilities, but you’ll also never have to hear a complaint about running out of hot water for a shower!

Windows and Doors That Don’t Leak

At BrightLeaf, we always present high-performance options for windows and doors to double down on keeping monthly utility costs low and maintaining a comfortable temperature inside your home. In Lumen Point, we’ll be installing triple-pane windows and high-performance doors for maximum energy efficiency.

There are various manufacturers who combine high performance with beautiful design to help you achieve the best of both worlds.

Additionally, an energy-efficient home can be influenced by the distribution of windows in the floor plan. In Lumen Point, we strategically placed windows throughout the floor plan to manage the inside temperature and bring natural light into the most frequented spaces to reduce the need for running your furnace more often as well as day-time electricity usage, which is known as solar tempering.

Powering the Home with Solar Panels

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Being an eco-conscientious home builder, we want to encourage our homeowners to live as sustainably as possible, which is why we chose to offer an electric vehicle charging station in the Lumen Point plans.

Whether it’s a fully electric or a hybrid vehicle, your car will have the equipment it needs already installed when you move in.

This electric vehicle charging station will be powered directly from the solar panels on the house providing for the possibility of zero costs to fuel up your electric car.

10 Year Warranty

Reading all these amazing benefits that make up our energy-efficient Lumen Point model sounds great, but it’s not just slick marketing. To demonstrate how confident we are in the durability of Lumen Point – and all BrightLeaf homes for that matter – we offer a 10-year warranty on the envelope of your home.

What does this mean? It means all the exterior materials from the foundation to the roof of the home comes with a 10-year coverage guarantee.

A Healthier Home

BrightLeaf is committed to building homes that are not only significantly more energy-efficient than even the newest construction homes, but we also pride ourselves in homes that are certifiably healthier.

What does a healthy home really mean, you ask? It means using materials that are less toxic, moisture and mold resistant, as well as having a comprehensive indoor air quality system and use a radon mitigation system.

All BrightLeaf homes come with the EPA’s Indoor AirPlus certification.

Building an Energy-Efficient Home with BrightLeaf Homes

Great design without great construction is a pitfall of many new homes for sale these days, leading to frequent repairs and uncomfortable living environments.

At BrightLeaf, we take every opportunity we can to build better – whether that’s sourcing sustainable materials or improving construction methods – all with the intention of creating the ultimate living environment for you and your family.
